I’m a big fan of power snatches and power cleans. These supplemental lifts develop a significant amount of power and is just fun to do. But for most of my weightlifters, I rarely program powers into their cycles.
WHY?!
Time
Our weightlifters, like most, do not have the luxury to train x5-10 a week. Most of my lifters are able to do x3-4 of training for 60-90minutes a week and one big Saturday training day. This now forces us to focus on the biggest ‘bang for your buck ´ exercises that translates to the lifts. The selection choices will be subjective to the lifters but in most cases the its focused on the lifts themselves, some hang variation, and general strength movements..
Confusion
I coach my guys to have a smooth first pull and to focus on the 3rd pull. Most of my guys focus too much on the 2nd pull and need to learn to get under the bar quicker. Because of this we limit the power movements, which can confuse the lifters since most powers are ripped off the floor and has the lifter pull up with the arms instead of pulling DOWN with their arms. Because of this I’ve found that utilizing the powers reinforced bad habits and since we only have a short block of time and most of my guys are relatively new, we have to be very selective with our exercise selection.
Conclusion
While it would be great if we could expand our exercise selection, we unfortunately have a time limit. For our guys I found that working on the full lifts, some hang/block variations, and general strength exercises have the best carry over. Of course the selection within those categories will be subjective dependent on the weightlifters needs.
Stay strong,
