Receiving or catching the bar is rarely talked about. Yet this is a movement that pretty much all Olympic Weightlifters need to learn. The main key I’ve found to be beneficial for receiving the split jerk is timing. What I mean is to learn to “spring” at the legs as you load the bar back in the rack position. If you don’t you can put a LOT of stress on the body by just slamming it down on your shoulders.
Key Points to Focus On:
- Make sure your feet our underneath you- if you’re moving while the bar is descending you can easily injure yourself or lose the bar.
- Make sure you’re balanced before you start to descent bar- the goes hand and hand with feet underneath you, but you also need to ensure that you’re braced and ready to absorb the weight.
- Get head OUT of the way by looking up and keeping an eye on the bar- keeping your eye on the bar will help you with your timing.
- Spring with the bar- I often see many novice lifters load themselves with straight legs, this will clearly create undue stress on the body. Make sure to “spring” with the bar.
That’s it’s for today!
