*Aleksey Lovchev 205kg SNATCH!
I’m very baffled by forums and how much everyone is now an expert? It seems, at least in my opinion, people read what other coaches are saying and then regurgitate the info back out without fully understanding the concepts of “X” cue or even the process of developing a weightlifter and the skill of coaching.
One of my weightlifters suggested I should go onto some of these forums but I quickly found out that there is just WAY too much input. I get it, you’re super eager and want to know what to do but there are a few problems to take into consideration:
- Who is giving you the information- the person may not know what they are talking about.
- They aren’t in front of you and are not familiar with your development or past history. Therefore how would they know how to progress you?
Coaches AND Forum Input?
Listening to so many opinions can get you twisted and focusing on too many various points that can be meaningless. I read a post where a forum guy suggested focusing on the overhead position of the snatch but failed to look into WHY the overhead position of the bar was off, the forum guy was just fixated on trying to figure out cues and specialized exercises to help with the poster’s overhead stabilization. When in reality, the issue was not in the overhead position but the pull. This is all speculation, but I would guess that focusing on the pull didn’t receive as much attention because it wasn’t a glamorous or a “fancy fix”. In reality, a good coach keeps things simple and as straight forward as possible, adding in many variables can confuse the lifter and become counterintuitive.
My Advice
Focus on the biggest bang for you buck error and build on that, trying to listen to X forum poster, Y forum poster, and Z forum poster will water down your quality of training. For instance, if you’re getting pinned, (*generally speaking) you should be focusing on your squats and positioning in the lifts instead of spreading your attention thin with pulls, squats, the classical lifts, auxiliaries, presses, etc… Once you’ve finished a squat and classical lift program, you should then figure out what the next point of focus is, and so on.
Finally, if you have a coach, there is no reason why you should be trying to get input from various and random guys online. The weightlifting coach is in front of you, knows your development, and can make key adjustments during training…bottom line listen to your coach.
