I get a few questions asking why we deadlift the way we do…which is ending with your knees still bent (double knee bend position) vs. standing completely erect.
This is how we Deadlift:
This is a conventional deadlift:
To explain, we found the method ending in a double knee bend had a greater translation to a straight extension vs standing erect or going into a traditional clean pull or snatch pull. Typically in the clean or snatch pull my Weightlifters would over extend or change up the bar path. While it seems like a very simple maneuver theres actually a LOT going on and to add in 100%+ of your lifts can potentially cause the bar path to change.
Here’s Mike S. doing a clean pull:
While Mike has a great pull and maintaining great positioning, he’s a veteran and has many lifts under his belt. Most of my guys are currently under a year in, so we have to adapt accordingly.
The point of the post is for Coachs and Weightlifters alike to realize that training is organic. There isn’t a one size fits all, you have to adapt your Coaching/training to your Weightlifters skill, strength, and development, ottherwise you’re doing them a VERY big disservice.
Just for fun, here’s Alex before he started working with Fusion Weightlifting:
Here he is about a year later and about 6 months lifting with Team Fusion:
